The Hound of the Baskervilles is a suspense novels as is evident from the first nine chapters of the tale because the mystery is unraveled slowly towards the end and a momentum is created in the beginning that takes along the reader. The initial suspense is created by the walking stick that is left behind by Dr Mortimer and the conjectures that Holmes and Dr Watson make upon it which leads us to be keenly interested in the identity of the owner of the stick. Then the inexplicable death of Sir Charles, the fantastical story of the Baskerville hound, the stalking episode with Sir Henry,Dr Watson's strange encounters upon the moor and eventually the enigma of that ghastly moor, all these elements create a suspense that envelops the novel and makes it unputdownable until we have solved the mystery along with Holmes.
