2 EXPLAIN THE POETIC DEVICE SYNECDOCHE

1. The lines describe the affect of the curse that followed the filling of the albatross; the tragedy that befell upon and around the ship. The sea itself seemed to decay and stink. The water level of the sea decreased and the creatures that usually crawled and slithered deep below started to become visible.

2. Synecdoche is a figure of speech in which a part is used to designate the whole or the whole to designate a part.

(i) a part used to designate the whole; for example,

"Lets get our hands into it"

Here, the term 'hands' is substituted for a group of people.

(ii) the whole is used to designate a part; for example,

"India won the cricket world cup last year."

Here, the term 'India' is substituted for the Indian Cricket team.
