1] fluorine is more reactive than chlorine .Why ?

2] Mg is more metallic than be .why ?

1) The electron affinity of fluorine is less than chlorine.Still it is more reactive than chlorine due to following reasons:

i) The low dissociation energy of F2 molecule and high hydration energy of F- ion more than compensates for the low electron affinity of fluorine. The oxidizing power of flourine is more than chlorine.

ii) The electronegativity of fluorine is more than chlorine.

2) Metallic character is the tendency of an atom to loose electrons. On moving down the group, the atomic size increases due to which the ionization energy decreases and thus the ability to loose electron increases. Therefore , Mg is more metallic than Be.

1) Both F and Cl only need one electron to fill their outer shells, but the "vacancy" in F is much closer to the nucleus than the "vacancy" in Cl. Closer to the positive nucleus means greater attraction for electrons

2)Mg is more metallic than Be . Mg and Be both belong to the second group of modern periodic table . But Mg belong to 3rd period and be belong to 2nd period. therefore Mg is placed below the Be . As we know metallic character increases down the group . Therefore , Mg is more metallic than Be.

1] flourine is more reactive than chlorine beacause larger electrons gains electrons less easily.flourine is a larger atom than chlorine and therefore it gains electrons needed to fill its outershell, easier than a chlorine atom.

2] because metallic character increases down the group.
