Females: an ovum has 23 chromosomes, which is only X in females.
Sperm fuses with ovum- forms zygote. That gives us either the fusion of either a sperm with chromosome X with ovum X forming zygote XX(which develops into a girl) or a sperm with chromosome Y with ovum X forming zygote XY(which develops into a boy).
