Some people think that students should give achievement more credit than effort, as the saying goes, “ The ends justify the means”. Others believe the fact that students are awarded should be based on their final success. This issue is a controversial one but closer examination reveals that effort is of greater importance to the students than achievement.
One reason is that many people may gain the same achievement but they could not make the same effort. For supporting examples, one needs look no further than my case. My friend and I own the same luxurious cars after working five years at companies. The thing is my friend is often aided by his rich father and such car was his father’s gift while I have worked so hard, following a hectic working schedule to earn enough money for my car. Therefore, effort is a better measure in my case even we got the same achievement.
Another reason is that when achievement is appreciated more than effort, the youth will misunderstand what is a true value in their lives. This idea may send wrong signal to the young people that they must attempt to achieve their goal at any cost. For instance, they strive to earn money as much as they can even they have to commit crime or become drug traffickers. Consequently, students should learn how to make great effort rather than pay a particular attention to the final result.
Last but not least, effort make people mature. Only by making great effort in working do students comprehend new knowledge and experience many life lessons. For example, when students prepare for their exams, they learn how to work in a group, how to discuss efficiently and how to overcome exam’s pressure. Such experiences will become an integral part of their lives later. On the other hand, results will not teach the youth these lessons.
In summary, while there are arguments to be made on both sides of the issue, there are greater advantages for students to appreciate effort more than final success. That is because effort provides better measurement of success, teach students the true value and make them mature. For these reasons, I definitely believe that effort is a better base than achievement when deciding awards for students.
