A short report on the changes in irrigation and changes in production methods during the last 30 years.

The major shift in irrigation methods over the past 30 years has been from gravity systems to pressurized microirrigation or sprinklers. Pressurized irrigation systems provide farmers with greater control over the amount of water applied and, for properly designed and managed systems, better uniformity of irrigation than gravity systems.

Canals, soil borders, furrows and ditches are examples of gravity irrigation systems while pumps, drip and sprinkler irrigation are examples of pressurized microirrigation.
