The proverb is surely appliacble to the situation the poet finds herself in the poem, "Oh I wish I'd Looked after Me Teeth". If she would have avoided consuming so many sweets and sticky food, she would have been able to avoid the pain she is sufferring from now. If she would have paid attention to the first sign of cavity in her teeth and brushed properly and adopted good eating habits, she could have easily avoided the current situation where many of her teeth are affected by cavities and she has to go under drilling at a dentist.
