a water  tank can hold 56 1/4 litres of water .how much water is contained in the tank when it is 8/15 full?

8 x 56.25 ÷ 15 = 30 litres

Tank divided in to 15 parts and full tank capacity is 56.25 litres.
3.75 litres water can contain in one part.  
Therefore 8 parts of tank can hold 30 litres.

Find the LCM of the denominators, Add them and then, Subtract them from the capacity of the container.
