The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan was formulated with an objective of offering universal primary education. The program has various facets. Though it has been operational since 2000-2001, the program has failed to achieve each of its targets completely and fully. Nevertheless, it has made some impressive inroads too.

- Decline in the school drop our rate. The school dropout rate has decreased from 80 lakhs in 2009 to 30 lakhs in 2012.
- Increase in the net enrolment ratio.
- The programme has reached out to 192 million children in over 1.1 million habitations.
- Lakhs of schools have been constructed and lakhs of several others are under construction
- Classrooms have been added in the existing schools.
- Provisions for safe drinking water and toilets have been made in these schools.
- Lakhs of trained teachers have been recruited under the program
- Special emphasis has been on the education of the girl child and children belonging to the SC/ST categories. There has been a large improvement in the school going habits of the children in these two sectors.
