achivements of sarva shiksha abiyan

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan was formulated with an objective of offering universal primary education. The program has various facets. Though it has been operational since 2000-2001, the program has failed to achieve each of its targets completely and fully. Nevertheless, it has made some impressive inroads too.

The achievements of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan are as follows:
  • Decline in the school drop our rate. The school dropout rate has decreased from 80 lakhs in 2009 to 30 lakhs in 2012.
  • Increase in the net enrolment ratio.
  • The programme has reached out to 192 million children in over 1.1 million habitations.
  • Lakhs of schools have been constructed and lakhs of several others are under construction
  •  Classrooms have been added in the existing schools.
  • Provisions for safe drinking water and toilets have been made in these schools.
  • Lakhs of trained teachers have been recruited under the program
  • Special emphasis has been on the education of the girl child and children belonging to the SC/ST categories. There has been a large improvement in the school going habits of the children in these two sectors.
