Cationic polymerization
Proton adds to double bond of monomer to form carbocation which attacks another monomer to form bigger carbocation and so on. Then, loss of proton occurs to complete polymerization. The following steps occur in this polymerisation.
Anionic polymerization
Base adds to double bond of monomer to form carbanion which attacks another monomer to form bigger carbanion and so on. Then, addition of proton occurs to complete polymerization. Steps are:
