Technology is a very broad concept and is used to refer to several braches of science and study. There are many advantages due to science and technology but there are also many disadvantages. Science and technology have a great impact on everyday life and several people thrive to continue discovering the best technologies. It has brought many advantages in healthcare, medicine, education, and communication to help improve the life of mankind, but mankind could also be too dependent on technology and could fall into the wrong hands. There are obviously more advantages than disadvantages.
One of the biggest discoveries in science and technology is the mobile telephone. With phones we are able to talk to any person in the world, we can now also see the person we are talking to. Video calling is very popular now among companies. With the invention of video calling companies can now connect to other countries and expand their companies, which mean more jobs for the poor and unemployed. With all the new smartphones and programs on cell phones people can now conduct business anywhere and anytime. Also, cell phones now have GPS which means a parent can choose to give their children a phone and be able to track them anywhere they go (Mazar, 2011, para. 4). I can’t even remember a time when I didn’t have my cell phone in my pocket. Doctors even use smart phones to look up symptoms and treatments faster. As I was sitting in the doctor’s office the other day, my doctor pulled out his IPhone to look up different medications. He told me they no longer use books since they can pull it straight up from there, making it faster so they can get to many more patients.
There are also several disadvantages to mobile phone. Some major disadvantages are fraud. Many companies such as credit cards, insurance, and banking can now do their business over the telephone and many people are giving out their personal information to the wrong people. It is very easy now to steal others' identity with all the information people have in their phones. Another danger is using the phone while driving. According to an article on Ehow Tech nearly 32 percent of men and 23 percent of women admitted to driving distracted while on a cell phone as of 2009 (Mazur, 2011, para.5). GPS could have some bad consequences also. Smartphone users can now share their exact location over social websites making it easier for robberies, kidnappings, and other horrible things to happen (Gambone, 2011, para. 4).
Technology also has made a big change in education. The advancements of computers and internet had made studying easier for students and also help with busy, hardworking citizen’s advance in higher education. Online education lets students control their own learning and go at their own pace and setting their own goals, and with most e-learning programs immediate feedback is given, letting students work at a much faster pace. Email also lets teachers and students communicate more frequently so students can ask more questions and get faster explanations. Using computers also engages the student to learn more, they are more interested. Technology in schools can also be a wonderful link to between academics and emerging practices in professional fields. According to the article Importance of Technology in Schools (2008, para. 2), “Technology is an increasingly important aspect of modern school life and has dramatically changed the way teachers and students go about their daily activities.” With the advancement of the internet students can know research any subject in a faster time period causing them to receive better grades and gain more interest (Importance of Technology, 2008, para. 3).
A disadvantage to the advancements of technology in education is the fact that teachers are going to start losing jobs. With the advancement online education programs students can now learn using computers instead of in the classroom, so the teacher and school systems will not need to be used. Also, many of these teachers are not caught up on the new technology, so younger teachers are being brought in to take the place of the older teachers. Another disadvantage is the fact that technology is always changing so kids will have to keep relearning the newer stuff to keep up, and with the economy now it is hard for a lot of students to keep up with the expense of the new technology making it hard for these students to keep up on the new education.
One of the biggest impacts of science and technology is in healthcare and medicine. Healthcare has come a long way in the years, saving many lives and discovering methods to fight back diseases. For example, in the story “Struggling Back from War’s Once Deadly Wounds,” written by Denise Grady, Grady writes about a young man named, Jason Poole, who came back from the Iraq war as a completely different man. He was injured by a road side bomb making him blind in the left eye, deaf in the left ear, and weak (Grady, 2008, para. 4, p. 331). If a solider in World War II was injured the same way it was lucky if he even had the slightest chance of survival but with the advancements of science and technology doctors can now keep more people alive. Poole now has a new face and is slowly starting to speak and walk again. He will never be the same man again but at least he has a chance to make a new man of himself. Poole states “I’m not good looking, but I’m still Jason Poole, so let’s go,” (Grady, 2008, p.336). Poole still hopes to get married and have children, (Grady, 2008, p.340), and with the science and technology advancements he still can. Science and technology has taken health care and medicine to a whole new level. Raising the life expectancy level and finding the cure too many diseases. Cancer survives now can have the chance of survival, heart attacks aren’t as deadly, diabetes can be easily treated.
Science and technology may be wonderful but you have to be careful with how you use it. An experiment won’t always turn out the way someone hoped and can actually be life threatening. On example of a discovery going wrong is the story of” Frankenstein” written by Mary Shelly. This story is about a man, Victor Frankenstein, who was ambitious scientist that did whatever it took to discover new things. Frankenstein was devoured by the thought of human life and how he could remake a human life. He took pieces of other bodies and strung them together. He spent many months wrapped up in his experiment. He spent his days in confinement pouring himself into his work. He worked for the sole purpose of “infusing life into an inanimate body.” (Shelly, 2008, p.288). Once he unveiled his creation he realized what a mistake it was. He had made a horrible monster. This creature ended up killing all of Frankenstein’s loved ones trying to get revenge on Victor for making him such a “monster.” This story is a great reminder to many scientists on the delicacy of science and not everything will turn out the way they wanted it to.
Science and technology have had many key advancements is the last decade making human life easier, helping in field of education, communication, healthcare and much more. We live in a world full of science and technology and we often take it for granted and don’t take in consideration of the risks. Technology could fall into the wrong hands and not used for the greater of mankind. Scientific studies have made life easier and continue to grow every day and I have just scratched the surface. Before you pull out that IPhone and check your email, imagine what life would be like without these wonderful discoveries.
