Alkaline medium inhibits the rusting of iron- How??

Unlike dry cell the mercury cell has constant cell potential throughout its usefull life -- How???

 Rusting of iron is due to H+ ions!! 
Hence the alkaline medium reduces the conc of H+ (While increasing the conc of OH-).. hence not falicitating the rusting of iron!!

The presence of OH- ions furnished by the alkaline medium removes H+ from the reaction.

2Fe+O2+4H+ = H2O+2Fe2+

and retards the oxidation of Fe to Fe2+ and inhibits the rusting of iron.
