Dear student,

Alternate forms of a gene are known as alleles.They are present on homologous chromosomes. They occupy the same position on a chromosome and affecting the same characteristic but in alternative ways.  For example, a gene responsible for height can have two alleles one is for tallness(T) and other is for dwarfness(t).If the two alleles are similar they are called homozygous (TT or tt) and if the two alleles are different they are called hetrozygous (Tt).
