It means to consider the guest as god . Basically , it has been drawn from an ancient scripture . The whole statement is : Matru Devo bhava , Pitra devo bhava , Acharya Devo bhava , Athithi Devo bhava . It means consider Mother , Father , Teacher and Guest as god . Hope it helps ! :)
