Prior to independence, various provinces were there,
but not as at present For instance, Central province included
present Madhya pradesh, Chhattshgarh, a part of
Maharastra,(nagpur), Bengal presidency included Bengal, Bihar,
Orissa, Bombay presidency included Present Gujrat, Mumbai ,
Northern province included Punjab, Delhi etc and there were
provinces under kingly administration such as Hyderabad, Mysore,
Trivancore (present Kerala), Vijay Nagar etc and also Portuguese
ruled Goa French ruled Pondichery etc After independence (in 1948)
State reorganisation commission was set up and various states (
provinces) reorganised and emerged based on the languages(dialects)
spoken In 1968, During post independence period
Goa, Pondichery, Delhi were given 'State' status, Chattishgarh,
Uttaranchal and Jhharkhand - three new states have been formed
Earlier, seven north Indian states- Arunachal pradesh, Meghalaya,
Mani pur, Mijoram, Nagaland, Sikkim were formed
