can anyone answer in detail abt. epigeal n hypogeal germination????

Hi Rupa,

Details of two types of germination are as follow

1.  Epigeal germination: In this case, the cotyledons are lifted above the ground, and they act as the first leaves as a result of the rapid elongation of the hypocotyl. It takes place in seeds such as castor, cotton, sunflower, etc.

2.  Hypogeal germination: In this case, the cotyledons remain inside the soil and the epicotyl elongates and pushes the plumule above. It takes place in seeds such as pea, maize, mango, etc.

Following figures will illustrate the difference clearly

Hope this helps,

Cheers!!

E pigeal Germination -The type of germination in which the cotyledons come out of soil. It Is Generally found in dicot seeds like

castor, cotton, beans, tamarind, etc . In this case , the cotyledons usually become green and manufacture food for the growing seed

-ling for a day or two. They then dry up and fall off.

Hypogeal Germination - The type of germination in which the cotyledons remain below in the soil. This type of germination is seen

both in monocot and dicot seeds. In this case , cotyledins do not become green but they gradually dry up and fall off.Seeds of gram, pea ,groundnut, mango etc undergo Hypogeal germination.
