The following were some of the proinent authors:
- Charles Dickens- His work, the Pickwick Papers were serialised in a magazine. His other works included Hard Times and Oliver Twist.
- Emile Zola- His novel Germinal was based on the theme of industrialisation.
- Leo Tolstoy- He was Russian novelist who wrote extensively about rural life.
- Thomas Hardy- He was an English novelist who wrote on the theme of disappearing rural communities. His work was Mayor of Casterbridge.
- Jane Austen- Her most famous novel was Pride and Prejudice.
- Charlotte Bronte- Her major work was Jane Eyre.
- Novels based on colonial themes included Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and R L Stevensons's Treasure Island.
- Baba Padmaji- He was a Marathi writer whose works included Yamuna and Paryatan.
- O. Chandu Menon- He was a Malayali author who wrote the famous novel Indulekha.
- Kandukuri Viresalingam initially planned to translate an English novel. However, he abandoned this idea nad later wrote his own novel called Rajasekhara Caritamu.
- Bengali novels of the time included Durgeshnandini and Anandmath by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya, and Sarat Chandra's Devdas.
- The first proper Hindi novel was Pariksha-Guru written by Srinivas Das. Premchand was the most prominent Hindi writerwho wrote Sewasadan and Godaan. Devaki Nandan Khatri was another famous author who wrote the novel Chandrakanta.
