The difference between rural and urban poverty is:

Rural poverty refers to poverty found in rural areas, including factors of rural society, rural economy, and rural political systems that give rise to the poverty found there.It is due to:

  1. Low level of economic development

  2. Demographic trends like high growth rate of population

  3. Structural inequalities like caste system

  4. Lack of oppurtunities in the form of education and employment to get out of poverty trap

  5. Unequal distribution of resources in world economy

  6. Surplus labour in primary sectors of economy rather than being diverted to other sectors.

 

 

Urban poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon. The urban poor live with many deprivations. Their daily challenges may include:

  • limited access to employment opportunities and income,
  • inadequate and insecure housing and services,
  • violent and unhealthy environments,
  • little or no social protection mechanisms, and
  • limited access to adequate health and education opportunities.
