can u give me a brief description about all the forms of figure of speech?

Few of the various figures of speech are:

  • Simile is a figure of speech which means an implied comparison made between two objects of different kinds which have however at least one point in common. Instances of the same are: love is like a melody, crazy like an insane person, he tiptoed inside like a wolf, her replies are as witty as a fox.

  • Oxymoron: It is the figure of speech which produces a self-contradictory effect. In this, two contradictory qualities are predicted at once of the same thing. Instances of the same are: “cruel kindness”, “dry water”, “so falsely true”, etc.

  • Irony: It is a mode of speech in which the real meaning is exactly the opposite of that which is literally conveyed. It is an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated. It is the witty language which is used to convey insults or scorn. Instances of the same are: a) the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.

  • Imagery: It is the figurative description or illustration. It is the use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions, or ideas.

  • Metaphor is an implied simile. They are different from simile because like similes they do not state that one thing is like another or acts as another but takes that for granted and proceeds as if the two things were one. For instance,a) The camel is the ship of the desert, b) He was a lion in the battlefield, c) She was a nightingale in the concert.

  • Personification is a figure of speech where inanimate objects and abstract notions are spoken of as having life and intelligence. For instance, a) The stars danced in the moonlit sky; b) Fear knocked on the door, c) Faith always answers to prayers.
