Comment on the appropriateness of the title 'The Last Lesson'?

The chapter is titled the last lesson because it was M. Hamel's last lesson as well as the last French lesson in the school.

On the last day in school, M. Hamel wore his fine Sunday clothes as a mark of respect for the language and culture is being invaded by foreigners. He was feeling nostalgic as well as well repentant. He expressed his disappointment regarding man’s general inclination towards procrastinating things. He also pointed out parents’ and his own fault in sending students on their errands and not giving due attention to the learning of French. His speech is an attempt to make the audience conscious about the absurdity of not being able to speak or write one’s native language. He feels that one’s language can serve as a ray of hope in times of enslavement and captivity. Hence, the title is appropriate to the chapter.
