Comment on the supernatural events in the hound of Baskerville.

The novel Hound of the Baskervilles is a classic tale of pitting rational thought against supernatural belief. The legend of the hound's curse, the mysterious deaths, the disturbing ancestral history of the family and the game of espionage that unfolds creates a delectable aura of suspense in the story. The instances of supernatural activities begin with the mysterious death of Sir Charles upon the moors, Dr Mortimer's discovery of the giant footprint of a hound, the sighting of a creature which fit the bill upon the moors, the manuscript containing the legend of the hound and Hugo Baskerville's frightening tale as well as Barrymore's nocturnal wanderings around the house. The light from the moor which is later established to be from the escaped convict Selden, the howls of the hound and the chilly atmosphere of the moors all contribute towards creating an aura of mystery. As the story gradually shapes up we see more and more mysterious occurrences like Miss Stapleton's warnings to Dr Watson on Sir Henry's account, Stapleton's strange behaviour towards Sir Henry's attempt to court his sister, finally the attack of the hound of Selden which leads to his gruesome death. All these instances come together to impart a sense of suspense and supernatural splendour to the story. The importance of the supernatural events stems from the fact that it helps us to constantly challenge our own thought processes, whether to believe in a legend or to investigate further and establish the truth. As Holmes navigates his way through a web of clues, lies and facts, we also undertake this journey to see how the mystery unfolds. These supernatural activities help in engaging the reader's attention to the utmost.
