South Asia remains one of the poorest regions in the world. According to World Bank  data,  about 14% of the population in this region lives below the poverty line. Within the region, India has the highest percentage of population under poverty. Over 20% of the population in India are poor according to the World Bank. This is followed by Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan. Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka perform relatively better with Sri Lanka having the lowest proportion of population under the poverty line in the region.
