Define poverty, according to traditional and modern approach. Also give three points of difference between these two approaches?

Traditionally, poverty has been defined in terms of just income. It refers to a state when one does not have sufficient income to maintain a basic standard of living.

The modern definition is broader. It refers to the inability of having choices and opportunities. It reflects a violation of human dignity and implies the lack of ability to participate effectively in society. It encompasses the traditional definition of not having enough food and clothing. But it differs from the traditional definition in the following respects.

1. It refers to lack of access to education and health opportunities.
2. It refers to insecurity and powerlessness of individuals.
3. It refers to susceptibility to violence and lack of access to clean water and sanitation.
