descibe the situation on jan 4 in the chapter we are not afraid to die

On January 4, post 36 hours of continuous pumping, they had finally reached the last few centimetres of water in the boat. The major task left had been to keep pace with the water still coming in. They could not set any sail on the main mast. Pressure on the rigging would simply pull the damaged section of the hull apart so they hoisted the storm jib and headed for where the narrator thought the two islands were. His wife, Mary had found some corned beef and cracker biscuits which they ate as their first meal in almost two days. But the respite was short-lived as black clouds started building up again behind them around four o'clock. Within the hour, the wind was back to 40 knots and the seas got higher. The weather continued to deteriorate by night and by the dawn of the next day, their situation had become desperate.
