Describe any 5 features of dictatorship.

Some of the characteristics of modern day dictatorships are as follows:

  • dictators dominate the government while dictating to the entire society its rules without any checks and balances
  • in the contemporary times dictators want to be known as saviors of their respective nations not not as mere dictators
  • dictators like presently take the help democratic machines like elections to gain power and then then a form of justification of dictatorship
  • Gaddafi, Ben Ali, Military Junta of Burma, Idi Amin of Uganda have all exploited “nationalism”, “national unity” and similar sentiments to manipulate the thinking of the people of their countries
  • institutional set up is deliberately emasculated to commit robbery of public wealth with impunity

- Many dictators have held the formal title of "President", but wield extraordinary powers. 
- Some dictators gain or continue to hold a military post.
