Poverty ratio has declined in India from 55 percent in 1973 to 36 percent in 1993. It is also projected to fall to 22 percent in 2015. The number of people living below poverty line has come down from 320 million to 260 million. It was stable at 320 million for a long time as the overall population of the country was increasing rapidly during this time.
