1. Outer membrane: The entire mitochondrion is enclosed by a smooth outer membrane. Like the plasma membrane, it is made up of phospholipids and proteins. It contains many pores on its surface known as porins. These enable the movement of molecules of a specific size.

2. Inner membrane: Unlike the outer membrane, the inner membrane is more complex. It contains a high amount of proteins. Except for oxygen, carbon dioxide and water, it does not allow any molecules to pass through it. This membrane is the main site for the production of ATP(energy currency of the cell)

3. Perimitochondrialspace:The space between the inner and outer membranes is known as the perimitochondrialspace. It contains several molecules that enter the organelle by crossing the outer membrane but are not able to pass through the inner membrane.
