Describe the poverty line managment in India ?

For managing the poverty line in India:
  • A minimum level of food requirement, clothing, footwear, fuel and light, educational, and medical requirements are taken into account
  • Calorie based standard is used to define poverty. The Planning Commission arrives at the desired calorie requirement per person, both for urban and rural population. Those who fail to avail these many calories in their dietary intake owing to lack of financial resources come below poverty line. The current calorie requirement stands at 2400 calories per person in rural areas and 2100 calories per person in urban areas.
  • The total amount of money required for buying these calories per month is arrived at and the poverty line determined. For the year, 2009-10, the poverty line for person from rural area was fixed at Rs. 673 per month and for urban areas, at Rs. 860 per month.
