Difference between coaltar and bitumen

Coal tar is a thick, black liquid having an unpleasant smell which is obtained by destructive distillation of coal i.e. heating coal in the absence of air .

Bitumen is a black sticky substance which is obtained by fractional distillation of petroleum.

 Coal tar is a thick, black, opaque fluid obtained as a by product of the process of manufacturing coke. Eg. it is used in soaps, perfumes etc.

Bitumen has a carbon content of around 60-80% & is mainly used for power generation.
