The basic idea behind this movement was Mahatma Gandhi 's belief that the British rule would collapse if Indians did not cooperate with the British.

  •   The non cooperation movement was adopted in the Nagpur Congress session of 1920 and came into play between 1921-1920.
  • No violence was intened in this movement, people were encouraged to boycott imperial institutions like civil services, army, school, unverisities run by the govt. etc
  • Foreign good and cloth was also boycotted.
  • Nothing against the law or illegal was practised during this movement.
  • This movement was called off my MK Gandhi as it had turned violent in many places.
  • The civil disobidience movement was started from 1930.
  • This movement from a consequence of an ultimatum which was not fulfilled by the govt under Lord Irwin.
  • Basically, Gandhi had written a letter to the govt staing his 12 demands, the most important being the abolition of the taxes on salt by march 11.
  • As the governent did not negogiate, Gandhi on April 6 1930, march to Dandi with his trusted 74 volunteers and himself broke the salt law by boiling sea water and manufacturing salt.
  • People during this movemnt were encouraged not only to not cooperate witht he colonial govt but also disobey the law and break brutal and unjustiable laws made by the colonial power. This was the basic difference between the two movements.
  • Also the Civil disobidience movement ended by the Irwin Gandhi pact under which all the political prisoners were released and MK Gandhi agreed to attend the second round table conference in London.

During the Non-Cooperation movement people were asked not to cooperate with the British.

But during the Civil disobedience movement people were asked not only to refuse
cooperation with the British but also to break the colonial laws.
