difference between renewable and non-renewable sources of energy

Resources are considered renewable if they can be replenished within a relatively short period of time. Nonrenewable resources must be considered gone forever once used up because they take millions of years to regenerate.

Renewable energy is that energy derived from resources which are not finite. So wind power. & solar power are RENEWABLE energy sources because they will not run out. There will always be wind and always be sunlight. There is no end to the supply of those things.

Non renewable energy sources are those which are finite. So coal is non-renewable since one day (soon?) they will find that there is no more coal underneath the earth and then that will not be a viable energy source anymore, since we cannot manufacture new coal or grow it etc. and it takes millions of years and precisely the right conditions and elements to be produced naturally.

Bio-fuels can be said to be renewable energy sources since they are grown (corn, palm oil etc) but they are environmentally damaging because the bio-fuel crops are being grown where we need to grow food to prevent massive world hunger.

Fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas are also finite resources because just like coal they will run out one day. It is thought by some people that peak oil levels will be reached sometime in the next decade. That means that world oil stocks will reach a certain level and then begin to fall swiftly. We could be out of oil on the planet in less than fifty years. If renewable energy sources do not begin to be seriously investigated by world governments very soon we will be dacing the worst human crisis in the history of the planet.

Renewable energy sources are sources that will not run out. For example using vegetable oil as a car fuel instead of diesel. The sunflowers or the oil seed plants that produce the oil can be grown again and again and again. The diesel, on the other hand, is produced from crude oil which cannot be made again and will run out as stocks are used up. This means diesel oil is a non-renewable energy source.

Another example is wind turbines (renewable) and electricity from a coal-fired power station. The wind will not suddenly stop because we have used it all up, like the coal. Wind will always be there to drive the turbine and produce energy to light people's homes. Basically what it all comes down to is that a renewable source of energy can be used time and time again but a non-renewable will eventually run out as when all the crude oil is pumped out of the ground.

Non-renewable sources of energy cannot be replaced or regrown after they have died or been used up, such as oil, coal and natural gas (all made from dead animal and vegetation matter from millions of years ago.)

Renewable resources:

  1. THE RESOURCES THAT ARE UNLIMITED & CAN BE REPLENISHED AGAIN & AGAIN ARE CALLED RENEWABLE RESOURCES.
  2. THESE ARE NOT EXHAUSTED BY HUMAN ACTIVITIES. SO, THESE ARE AKA NON-EXHAUSTIBLE NATURAL RESOURCES.
  3. EG. AIR, WATER, SOLAR ENERGY.

NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES:

  1. RESOUCES THAT ARE LIMITED IN NATURE AND TAKE HUNDREDS OF YEARS TO GET REPLENISHED ARE CALLED NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES.
  2. THESE ARE EXHAUSTED BU HUMAN ACTIVITIES, SO THESE ARE AKA EXHAUSTIBLE NATURAL RESOURCES
  3. EG. FOSSIL FUELS, MINERALS
