Difference between temporary hard/soft water and permanent hard/soft water ???:?

Temporary and permanent is used only in terms of hard water. Soft water is always soft.
Temporary hardness of water permanent hardness of water
Temporary hardness is due to the presence of bicarbonates salt of Ca and Mg ions in water Permanent hardness is due to the presence of Cl- and SO42- salts of Ca and Mg in water
It is simply removed by boiling the water  It does not removed by simply boiling of water.
The other chemical used for removing bicarbonate salts from water is treatment of water with calculated amount of quick lime. Permanent hardness is removed by treating the water with Sodium carbonate. It forms the precipitate of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions into insoluble carbonates

Hard water:

  • It is an impure form of water having a high mineral contents, like Ca, Mg, sulphides, chlorides , bicarbonates etc.
  • It is little alkaline and the pH is greater than 7.8 as 8 or more .
  • It does not give lather with soap and can harm theboiler, cooling towers, and also injurious to health if some other elements like Arsenic is present.
  • The hardness is above 120 gm/L

Soft water:

  • It is a pure form of water in which the only ion is Na+, and a natural source is rain water.
  • It's pH ranges from 5.5 to 7.7
  • It gives lather with soaps and do not harm by any means, whereas it is used in chemical processes and for drinking and all life processes.
  • Its hardness is between 0-60 gm/L
