differentiate between state and national parties?

The difference between 'state'  and 'national' party can be drawn from the name itself.

  • In  a state party, the party members aim to heighten regional interest whereas in a national party, the national interest is given importance.
  • State party can contest elections only in that state whereas national party can contest elections in all states.
  • BJP, Congress are national parties whereas Akalis, Trinamool Congress are examples of State parties
  • Also there is different criteria for recognition of a party as State party Or National Party
The criteria for recognition of a party as National party are as under:

1. If a party is recognised as a state party in 4 or more states.
2. If a party has secured more than 2% of seats in Lok Sabha from 3 or more states.
3. It secures 6% of votes in 4 or more states in Lok Sabha and overall 4 seats.

The criteria for recognition of a party as State party are as under:

1. If a party secures 6% of valid votes polled and 2 seats in Legislative Assembly elections.
2. If a party secures 6% of votes and 1 Seat in Lok Sabha.
3. If a party gets 3 seats in Legislative Assembly or 3% of the Legislative Assembly seats.

  1. A party that secure at least 6% of the total votes in LokSabha elections or assembly elections in four states and win at least four seat inLokSabha is recognised as a national party
  2. They are countries wide parties and their units in several states
  3. these units follow the same policies,programmes and strategies
State party
  1. these exist,operate and function at the regional level
  2. A state party lays more stress on regional cultural identity,which it wants to preserve and promote.they want more state autonomy
  3. Election symbols allotedto regional political parties are allotedto them only for the particular state or union terriorty
