do you think management has the charecteristics of a full fledged proffession ???

Features of Profession:

  1. Well-defined body of knowledge
  2. Restricted entry through examination
  3. Professional association
  4. Ethical code of conduct
  5. Service motive

Although, management does not possess all the characteristics of profession, yet it has only some of the important features to be regarded as a profession. The following are the characteristics of management that qualifies it to be treated as a profession.

  1. It has well defined body of knowledge that is taught in numerous universities and institutions.  (Matches with Profession)
  2. There is no restriction for anyone to be designated as manager, even if he/she does not hold a degree in management. No mandatory degree and training is required. Although a degree and formal training is regarded as a desirable criterion for the post of manager. (Does not match with Profession)
  3. There are various professional associations such as AIMA but it is not compulsory for managers to be a member of such association unlike, other professionals such as doctors, lawyers, etc. (Does not match with Profession)
  4. The purpose of managers does not completely tallies with that of required in any other professions. There has been a recent shift in the purpose of managers from profit maximisation to rendering services and enhancing the welfare of the society as a whole. The service motive of managers aligns with the service motive of professionals of any other branch. (Partially matches with Profession)

Conclusion- Thus, based on the above points we can conclude that management does not exactly fulfill all the characteristics to be regarded as profession, but it is fast converging to qualify as a professional.
