Features of Profession:
- Well-defined body of knowledge
- Restricted entry through examination
- Professional association
- Ethical code of conduct
- Service motive
Although, management does not possess all the characteristics of profession, yet it has only some of the important features to be regarded as a profession. The following are the characteristics of management that qualifies it to be treated as a profession.
- It has well defined body of knowledge that is taught in numerous universities and institutions. (Matches with Profession)
- There is no restriction for anyone to be designated as manager, even if he/she does not hold a degree in management. No mandatory degree and training is required. Although a degree and formal training is regarded as a desirable criterion for the post of manager. (Does not match with Profession)
- There are various professional associations such as AIMA but it is not compulsory for managers to be a member of such association unlike, other professionals such as doctors, lawyers, etc. (Does not match with Profession)
- The purpose of managers does not completely tallies with that of required in any other professions. There has been a recent shift in the purpose of managers from profit maximisation to rendering services and enhancing the welfare of the society as a whole. The service motive of managers aligns with the service motive of professionals of any other branch. (Partially matches with Profession)
Conclusion- Thus, based on the above points we can conclude that management does not exactly fulfill all the characteristics to be regarded as profession, but it is fast converging to qualify as a professional.
