"English education enslaved us" give your opinion.

Dear Student,

Gandhi had rejected colonial education saying it to have enslaved us. To support this stand, he suggested various reasons. He criticised it for cramming system, the dependence on textbooks. Under colonial rule, the teacher had a prescribed job to do that was based on what the authorities wanted the children to learn. He was opposed to the teacher's subservience to textbooks.

But there are arguments against the motion as well. Education in English or Dear Studentndi does not make much difference, language is just a medium. What education does, is the instillation of values and knowledge. It is the authority that decides the nature of education, whether it is enslaving or liberating. So if the motive of the education imparter is to control the minds of the education seeker and extract their particular interests out of it, then no doubt that education is enslaving.

English Education, for example, during the British rule was imparted so as to train the Indians in such a way that they could fill the clerical posts that were required for the running of English administration. But in today's date, look what English education has done! In India, where population and employment problems are so grave, English education has given opportunities to Indians in world job market.

English or colonial education created a sense of inferiority in the minds of Indians. It made them see Western civilisation as superior, and destroyed their pride in their own culture. Thus charmed by the West and by everything coming from the West, the Indians educated under the colonial system would end up being the admirers of British rule in India; thus, willingly forgetting their enslavement, and enslaving themselves further.
