ON POLLUTION

Environmental pollution is the biggest menace to the human race on this planet today. It means adding impurity to environment. The environment consists of earth, water, air, plants and animals. If we pollute them, then the existence of man and nature will be hampered.

It is true that trees are being cut down rapidly. Our earth is becoming warmer. If pollution continues, the day is not far when our earth will be a boiling pan and become a desert. Or it will be covered with sea water causing destruction of mankind.

Pure air is always needed for inhaling. If we take pure air, our health improves. On the other hand impure air causes diseases and impairs our health and causes our death. Smoke pollutes the air. It is the root of air pollution. The smoke which is discharged from industries, automobiles and kitchens is the mixture of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane etc. These are all poisonous gases. These cause lung-cancer, tuberculosis etc. which take a heavy toll of life. The glaring incident is the Bhopal gas leak in December 1984. Thousands of the residents of Bhopal died due to lungs problem which was caused by methylamine gas from the Union Carbide Plant.

The garbage emitting foul smell, the decaying plants and animals also cause air pollution. Hence the doctors advise the patients having lungs trouble to settle in some rural places because the air of villages is pure and free from population.

Then comes sound pollution. The harsh sounds of buses, its, mopeds etc. affect our power of hearing and causes fart trouble. It has been reported that there are two villages named Biraspalli and Devadas Palli near Dum Dum airport m Calcutta where a large number of people have lost their power of hearing. This is because of the frequent sounds of planes coming in and going out of Dum Dum Airport. The evils of sound pollution can be imagined from this example.

The water of rivers and seas is being constantly polluted all over the world by various dangerous chemical and biological wastes. Mills and factories discharge very harmful waste waters into many rivers and sea. The water of the Ganges flowing by the side of both Varanashi and Calcutta is extremely polluted and contains all sorts of dangerous bacteria. It is really very strange and laughable that large number of the Indians regard this water as holy. They even drink this water for salvation. There is no doubt that the fish that grow in such waters are poisonous too.

Reckless application of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides pollutes the soil. Vegetables and fruits are quite injurious today, because they contain the poison of insecticides and pesticides.

If the air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil which produces our crops, vegetables and fruits, all become more and more impure, then our chances of good health and longevity will be very less and less. Environment pollution is a serious menace to our existence. Realising the danger, we must plant trees in large number to absorb impure air. Impure water from industries can be sent back for purification and then it can be used for irrigation purpose. Our government is well aware of the fact and is taking steps to save environment from pollution. We have also I minister to look after the environment.

ON GLOBAL WARMING

Global warming is the term used to describe a gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earths atmosphere and its oceans, a change that is believed to be permanently changing the Earths climate. Even though it is an ongoing debate, it is proved by the scientists that the planet is warming.

The 29th century is experiencing a continued increase of Earths mean atmospheric temperature by about 1.4 degrees F and about two thirds of it occurring since 1980. This is global warming is affecting the natures balance and has a huge impact on life like continued heat waves, and sudden occurrence of storms and floods. Dont we see time to time the epidemics that are devastating to human life and the flooding of the farmlands that puts economy in a deep hole?

Scientific evidence indicates that since 1950, the worlds climate has been warming, primarily as a result of emissions from non -stop burning of fossil fuels and the razing of tropical forests. Since the industrial revolution till this day, there is a constant emission of the carbon into the atmosphere, everything we do we leave carbon footprints. It is a man made cause of the global warming. The global emissions jumped 3 percent in 2011 and are expected to jump another 2.6 percent in 2012, researchers reported.

The greenhouse effect is a process by which the greenhouse gases absorb thermal radiation; these are then reradiated in all directions. But when some of these radiations come back to the surface and lower atmosphere, it causes increase in the average surface temperature leading to global warming.

Global warming Causes

The causes are many of which the main culprit is the increase in the greenhouse gases that is produced by burning fossil fuel and deforestation, thus intensifying the greenhouse effect leading to global warming. The four main contributors of the greenhouse effect are, water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone.

Mining for coal and oil releases methane in the atmosphere. More ever the leakage from natural gas fields and landfills are additional source of methane. Excessive cutting down of the trees is another factor causing global warming. When deforestation happens the efficiency by which carbon dioxide is stored and oxygen released by the green plants are decreased to a huge rate in turn causing increased concentration of carbon dioxide that leads to increased greenhouse effect.

The nitrous oxide from fertilizers, gases used for refrigeration and industrial processes are other factors that cannot be forgotten as the cause of Global Warming.

Another source of methane is methane clathrate, a compound containing large amounts of methane trapped in the crystal structure of ice. As methane escapes from the Arctic seabed, the rate of global warming will increase significantly.

Ice caps and glaciers reflect sunlight, bouncing high temperature sun -rays back into space away from the Earth. When these icecaps are removed the earth gets warmer as the dark oceans absorb much thermal radiation from the sun.

Some regions may be wet with rain and some areas will suffer drought due to global warming. The climatic changes happen due to global warming. Seasonal changes are unpredictable unexpected thunderstorms might result as mentioned earlier.

The burning of wood (should be reduced to a greater extent) releases oxidizable carbon to the atmosphere whose presence in greater amount causes the elevation of temperature.

As I drove past a large industrial factory, I couldn't help but notice the huge smokestacks that rose high into the air. I couldnt help but notice the thick and ominous clouds of dark gases that poured endlessly out of the smokestacks and into the clear sky. As I thought about all of the harm that does to the atmosphere, I also noticed that the same gases are released by cars and trucks every day. Those gases, which are called greenhouse gases, are one of the main causes of global warming. The combustion of fossil fuels in cars, factories, and electricity production blanket the earth and trap heat in, almost like a greenhouse does. Some examples are: carbon dioxide (gas responsible for the most warming), methane (comes from landfills and agriculture), and nitrous oxide (comes from fertilizers). All of the heat that is trapped inside the earth does a lot of damage, even though most people do not realize it immediately. We need to put an end to the horrific destruction of our home, before it is too late to save it.Excess heat in the earth has already begun to drastically affect the poles. Glaciers are melting in every section of the world, which put many people at risk. Those risks include flooding, droughts, and a lack of drinking water. A frightening fact is that a large portion of the Himalayan glaciers have thinned and retreated over the past 30 years, says the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Also, sea levels are rising because of the melting of the poles, which puts small island nations at risk. Thirdly, coral reefs, which are rare and beautiful plants in the ocean, are in danger from lack of sunlight also because of rising sea levels. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Antarctic ice will supply the most flooding to global sea rise out of all the worlds glaciers. The Antarctic ice sheets contain 95% of the planets freshwater! Since a very small amount of the human population lives in the poles or in Antarctica, it may seem like the melting of the poles doesnt affect the world. Even though humans may not be affected as directly, there are many species of animals that are in danger of extinction because of global warming. A well known example is the polar bears, who are losing their hunting grounds as the arctic ice melts at alarming rates. According to the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), there are also certain species of fish, like trout and salmon, which will decrease in population because they need cold water to survive. Many other aquatic animals will be affected in a negative way because of the erosion levels that will rise because of all the floods, and even migratory species are greatly affected by the change in climate. If global warming continues at this rate for much longer, the earth and all of its inhabitants will find themselves in a dire situation.Even at this point in time, global warming can be stopped. There are many solutions that can be considered. National Geographic says that the main solution is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations (GHG), which make holes in the ozone layer and trap heat in the earth. To do that, more forestland can be added to increase the amount of carbon dioxide that is stored in forests and the amount of oxygen that is released. Also, the amount of carbon dioxide that is released by fossil fuels can be captured and stored underground. More renewable resources should be used, like wind, sun, hydro, geothermal, tidal, and biomass energy. There is even an act called the Clean Air Act, which Congress needs to support and which has been a subject of much controversy. Lastly, there are things that everyone around the world can do to make a change in global warming. Trying to conserve energy whenever possible and not littering are just a few of the many things that can be done. If everyone starts taking small steps to put an end to global warming, then the entire world will start to see a difference- we must start now!
