Answers to the questions posed by you are:

  1. Heading from Cape Town the family proceeded to the southern Indian Ocean known as the world's roughest seas. Here, on January 2, the waves of the ocean started getting gigantic. The sea started rolling up to form huge rolling waves. The forthcoming disaster could be understood when at 6pm the wind dropped in a silence, with the entire sky growing vehemently dark. Waves and clouds started roaring, forming a scary environment. It was then that they realised that the thing they were looking at wasn't a cloud but a huge wave breaking on their ship.

  2. When faced with danger, the author and his wife started losing hope and thought that their end was near. However, when the children were hurt and badly caught in danger, they remained optimistic and assured their parents in turn. They didn’t fear death as long as they were with their parents. The children cheered them up and gave them courage by drawing a card which read, “Oh, how I love you both. So this card is to say thank you and let’s hope for the best.”

  3. There was a time when the narrator lost all hopes of surviving. This is when he went to check on whether the children were okay. Here, to his amazement, the children said “...we are not afraid of dying if we can all be together...” This is the moment it is clear that the narrator was the person who needed hope, determination, courage and perseverance rather than the children. Their note of optimism gave the narrator new strength to fight the storm and save his family.
