Explain Modern Education


1)  British felt that India has to be civilised and this would be possible only by educating the people through English language

Macaulay emphasised the need to teach English language and as a result, English Education Act was introduced

The main aim of this Act was to make English the medium of instruction for higher education

In 1854, an educational despatch was sent to Governor General in India known as Woods Despatch

 outlined the educational pattern that has to be followed in India and the practical benefits of European learning system

6)  This system would improve European trade and commerce in India and would also encourage Indians to buy European goods

This profit earning benefits made British to open more schools, colleges and universities in India

By the Education Act of 1870, education and schooling was made compulsory thereby abolishing child labour and making children of all age groups go to school

As per this Act, civilised adults understand proper behaviour and also make them led disciplined life style
