explain the oxidation in ketones

Dear Student,

The oxidation of ketones involve the rupturing of the carbon-carbon bonds on either side of ketone group giving rise to mixture of carboxylic acids.

The oxidation of the unsymmetrical ketones takes place according to the Popoff's rule, which states that the keto group remains preferentially with the samller alkyl group.

For example; the oxidation of pentan-2-one, the major product formed is CH3COOH and CH3CH2COOH.

Hope it is clear to you.

Cheers!
