Explain with examples different forms of social differences.

Social differences can take different forms in different societies. They can take 2 forms -

1) Overlapping social differences or social divisions - These social differences are said to happen when a community sees itself as better than the other communities, or they enjoy some special priveledges and statuses in the society. The more powerful and majority community tries to supress the weaker and minority community. These differences are also known as social divisions. Take the example of USA. The blacks in USA tend to be poor, suppressed and discriminated. The whites tend to be more powerful and rich.

2) Cross cutting social differences or simply social differences - These social differences are said to happen when two or more communities exists in a society, but they do not see themselves as the better one. The communities tend to live in peace, and the differences do not affect the relations between the comunities. Take the example of Northern Ireland and the Netherlands. The population of both the countries have 2 major communities - the Roman Catholics and the Protestants. While the Catholics are weaker and poorer in Northern Ireland, in Netherlands both the communities are equal. This has led to social conflicts in Norther Ireland, but peace in the Netherlands. Here the example of Northern Ireland is that of social division, and that of the Netherlands is of cross cutting social difference.

Social divisions can take many forms. For instance:-
1. It divides similar people from one another but at the same time also unites very different people.
2. It makes people belonging to the same religion feel that they do not belong to the same community as their caste or sect is different.
3. Rich and poor persons from the same family may not keep good relations as they feel that they are different.
4. Also, social differences overlap each other where one social difference is overlapped by others. For e.g. - Dalits in India tend to be poor and discriminated against as they are differentiated also with another overlapping factor- the income factor.
5. Social difference also cross-cut each other divide or unite people accordingly. But these are easier to accommodate.

Social differences can take 2 forms-

Overlapping differences causes when some of differences are overlapped by other differences.this leads to social division.
Example-dalits of India are discriminated as they are poor and landless.

Cross-Cutting differences cause when people shared a common idea on one issue but likely to be different on other.this is easier to accommodate.
Example-Catholic&Protestant of Nertherland, none of them were rich or poor.

“Social differences” are mostly in the forms of accident of birth or choice. Actually in general way we all experience social differences based on accident of birth, for example-male or female, tall and short.
At the siame time some social differences are based on our choices.
For example, some people are singer or atheists by choice. The examples of Belgium and Srilanka also show both regional and social differences which led to social divisions. Srilanka has shown the example of linguistic and religious differences. Hence social difference can take different forms in different societies.

hope this helps you ....

Social differences '' are mostly based on an occasion of birth of decision. For instance, people around us are male or female, they may be tall oe short, and they may have a varied type of complexions, or have different natural talents or limitations on the other hand, some of the social differences are based on the choices we made .for example, some people use to follow religion while some are atheists by choice.
