Give 3 differences between displacement reaction & double displacement reaction .

We know that displacement reactions are those reactions in which an element replaces another element from its compound. Displacement reactions are basically of two types

1) Single displacement reactions

2) Double displacement reaction

Single displacement reactions are those in which an uncombined single element simply replaces the other in a compound. A general chemical equation for reaction is

AB + X -------> AX + B

For example

A Double Displacement Reaction on the other hand is a reaction involving two molecules in which parts of two compounds are exchanged to give two new compounds. The general equation used to represent double displacement reactions can be written as:

AB + CD → AD + BC

Displacement reaction is a reaction in which one element displaces the other from its compound.

Example: 2A gNO 3 (aq)+Cu * Cu (NO 3 ) 2 (aq) + 2Ag (s)

Double displacement reaction is the reaction in which two different ions or group of ions are displaced from their respective compounds by each other.

Example: Na2SO 4 BaCl 2 (aq) * BaSO 4 (s) + 2NaCl (aq)

AND

Displacement reaction: The reaction in which one element displaces another element from its compound is known as displacement reaction. In these reactions, more reactive element displaces less reactive element from its compound.

Example- 2AgNO 3 (aq) +Cu *   Cu (NO 3 ) 2 (aq) + 2Ag (S) Silver nitrate CopperCopper nitrate Silver In the above reaction, Silver is replaced by copper because copper is more reactive than silver.

Double displacement reaction: The reaction in which two different atoms or group of atoms (ions) are displaced by other atoms or group of atoms (ions) is known as double displacement reaction.

  • Example – Na 2 SO 4 ( aq) BaCl 2 (aq) *   BaSO 4 (s) 2NaCl(aq) Sodium Sulphate)(Barium chloride) (Barium Sulphate) (Sodium Chloride ) Here, SO 4 2 - displaces Cl - ions and Cl - ions displace SO 4 2 - ions or both ions exchange each other. These reactions occur in ionic compounds.

displacement reaction: 1) a more highly reactive element displaces the less reactive element from its solution form.

2) generally no precipitate is formed. 3) eg: 3FeSO4 + 2Al --------------- Al2(SO4)3 + 3Fe [green] [colorless] [black] but,Al2(SO4)3 + 3Fe--------------- no reactiondouble displacement: 1) the exchange of ions between the two reactant compounds take place. if there is a double displacement reaction taking place then you dont have to consider the reactivity order. 2) generally precepitates are formed. note that all neutralisation reactions are double displacement reactions' special case as no ppt is formed. 3) Pb(NO3)2 + 2KI--------------- PbI2 + 2KNO3 [Colorless] [bright yellow [colorless] precipetate] EXCEPTIONS: NaOH + HCl --------------- NaCl + H2O [ no precipitate is formed even though exchange of ions took place. ]

Displacement reaction:- Those reaction in which one element takes the place of another element in a compound are called displacement reaction. For Example :- Fe + CuSO4 --- FeSO4 + CuDouble Displacement Reaction:- Those reaction in which two compounds by an exchange of ions to form two new compounds are called double displacement reaction. For Example :- Na2SO4 + BaCl2 --- BaSO4 + 2NaCl
