Some examples of inertia of rest:

1) when you shake a branch the leaves get detached. 

2) when you beat a carpet the dust particles come out.

3) when you are sitting in a car and it starts moving you lean backward. 

In the above examples, the leaves, dust particles and person sitting in the car are all in inertia of rest. But they are in contact with say the tree, carpet and car which are in motion. Due to the tendency of the object to remain in its state, the leaves and dust particles get detached from the tree and carpet respectively. The upper portion of the body goes backward when the car starts moving.
