A Short Monsoon Diary

-Ruskin Bond

I

This chapter is in the form of a diary in which the author, Ruskin Bond, describes the lush green monsoon season in the hills.

June 24

This was the first day that fog had descended on the hills after monsoon. It made the people sad and the birds quiet. All creatures became silent as they were covered by the mist. The author could hear Bijju speaking to his sister but could not see him due to the mist.

June 25

This day witnessed warm and humid weather with rain. It was different from the cold rain throughout the year in the hills. The first blossoms of the cobra lily could be seen. When asked by a school boy to describe the hill station and the valley, he said it was a blissful, heavenly place that might have been.

June 27

The rainy season announced the presence of animals and insects peculiar to that time of the year. The previous day, a leopard had grabbed a dog. Then it had attacked a cow in the evening. Bijjus grandmother had saved the cow by yelling curses at the leopard. The author was trying to get used to thousands of leeches.

Beautifully coloured birds had arrived scarlet minivets, drongos. Minivets could be noticed even in a thick tree due to their bright colours. They were chased by the unnecessarily angry drongos.

Climbers covered the trees and birds feasted on the abundant insect population.

II

August 2

The rain drops fell noisily on the tin roof throughout the night. There was no thunder or lightning, just continuous rain. The noise kept the author awake but at the same time, the rhythm of the drops helped him sleep.

The author found this season suitable for reading safe from the drenching rain in spite of the many leaks through holes in the roof.

August 3

The sun came out as the rain stopped. There were signs of life and activity a woman chopping wood; cows moving about; a crow cawing unhappily; water dripping from a leaking drainpipe. The melodious song of a thrush was heard from the valley.

August 12

The rain and mist had become a permanent feature for over a week. Everything was wet and nobody could step outdoors. The hills were green and colourful with grass and flowers of all kinds balsam, dahlias, begonias and orchids.

August 31

Plant growth was dense due to the monsoon rain. The seeds of the cobra lily had turned red, which indicated that the monsoon would soon be over. At that time though, the ferns were lush green, one could see orchids, mauve ladys slipper and white butterfly orchids. Other varieties included dahlias of all colours.

Reptiles and rodents hid in roofs, stores and attics as their houses were filled with rain water. A shrew wandered about the room and was saved from the children by their grandmother who considered it lucky. Surprisingly, the author received a cheque soon after.

October 3

The season changed from monsoon to winter but there was no respite from rain. The higher reaches witnessed snowfall. The hills were covered with wonderful golden sunlight after a raging hailstorm.

January 26

The author described the melancholy, frightening aspect of winter rain in a poem. He said that he sat alone after his friends visit was over. The silence was all-encompassing. He felt lonely in the house surrounded by mist and continuous rain. The rain drops fell on flowers, lemons, roofs and window panes. Even the trees had lost their lush, green appearance and shed their leaves. Their grey, lonely presence was scary.

March 23

The winter had come to an end. A menacingly black cloud cast a shadow.A severe hailstorm cleared the skies over the hill station of Mussoorie. A colourful rainbow was seen in the sky. hope it helped
