Give chemical tests to distinguish between the following pair of compound:

1. Ethanal and Propanal

2. Pheno and Benzoic acid

For phenol and benzoic acid u can use Sodiunhydrogencarbonate which will react with benzoic acis to give brisk efferevescence of carbon dioxide whereas phebol will not give any effervescence.

Ethanal and Propanal can be distinguished by Iodoform test in which Ethanal will react as it has alpha methyl group whereas propanal does not have any alpha methyl group and hence wont react with it.

phenol and benzoic acid can also be distinguished by neutral Fecl3 test.phenol gives a violet color on reaction but benzoic acid does nt

ethanal will give  positive iodofom test when reacted with   i2 nd NaOH it will give yellow colour ppt. while propanal will not
