nicola: 13 year old nicola , the elder of the two brothers is loving, caring, responsible and innocen. having immense will to work, this diligent young boy takes upon himself the responsibility of not only getting his sister treated for tuberculosis, but also shows motherly care on his brother who is younger to him by just one year. He lets the younger one sleep while he himself stays awake to sell newspapers to the passengers of the last bus at midnight. nicola takes life in stride and devotes himself to his work with such a great sense of devotion that even a stranger can see in no time his gentlemanly qualities. 
Jacopo; Shabbily dressed like nicola , jacopo, the younger of the two brothers , has almost all the qualities of his elder brother. howerver, this 12 year old lad is more full of life. the narrator found him to be as lively as a squirrel. though nicola carried an air of seriousness which seemed to be beyond his years, he was childish and quite artless. this small parentless child is  as lovable as he is loving.
