how are convection currents set up in the air ???

Here current refers to the flow of air from one point to another while convection refers to the way it does so.

It is a known fact that air flows, as we experience it the form of a light breeze from a fan or gusty winds in a typical thunderstorm. The reason why air flows can be different but in the natural world it occurs most often due to temperature changes.

When we heat a gas it becomes lighter due to the widening of intermolecular spacing upon receiving thermal energy. This lightness helps in movement of the gas. This gas can be air in our atmosphere which manifests its movement in the form of wind and breeze.

This movement of warmer air through layers of successive cooler layers is called convection current of air.
