how are representatives chosen in a democracy

The following points may help you:

a. In a representative form of democracy people elect their representatives who in turn make laws and policies for them.
b. One of the key features of democracy is having free and fair elections which rather serves as the foundation for setting up a democratic system.
c.Indis for instance has adopted such a system  where by the elected bodies  are not elected for life and are elected  for a certain period of time . This is to ensure that  no government is elected for lifetime and hence  become tyrannical.
d.It is important to  bring about changes in the political leadership.
Such a system ensures that ruling opposition parties gets fair chance to compete, win and lose elections.
e. For the purpose of elections, in our country  the entire country is divided into  electoral constituencies.

f. For  General elections to Lok Sabha , the entire country is divided into 543 constituencies, from which candidates contest. Candidate securing maximum number of votes is declared elected. They are elected by the first past the post system that is candidate getting /securing more votes than his contenders. However it is to be noted that for Lok Sabha, the President of India has power to nominate two members to the Lok Sabha from the Anglo-Indian community if he feels that the community is not adequately represented in the Parliament.
g. Likewise,
MLA is the Member of legislative assembly in a State.,  is directly elected by the people ,from a particular constituency. For assembly elections, it is  the state which is divided into various constituencies.Candidate securing maximum number of vote is declared elected from that constituency.
h. Further, we also have an upper house, that is Rajya Sabha where members are elected
indirectly through proportional representation system by a single transferable vote, by the representative from various states and Union Territories. 12 members here are nominated by the President .

The leaders of a democracy are chosen by fair elections.  While all democracies elect leaders, you may not know that the process for electing leaders is different in different democratic countries.

For instance, the United States is a republic or a "representative democracy".  This means we elect people to represent us in the different bodies of government.  We vote on who will represent us in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives and as President.

In the United Kingdom, citizens elect their members of parliament and then the political party with the most members of parliament selects the Prime Minister.  The Prime Minister in the United Kingdom is like the President in the United States, but there is also a Monarch – a King or a Queen who shares in ruling the country.

In 2000, it was estimated that there were about 120 democracies in the world -- 63% of the world’s countries were democracies.

Hope it helps and have a good day..!!!
