How can you identify a lime stone ? pls answer

Limestone is a sedimentary rock consisting mainly of calcium carbonate. To identify a rock of limestone containing calcium carbonate, vinegar test can be used.

  • Place the rock in a dish.
  • Pour some vinegar on it.
  • Watch to see if the vinegar fizzles. I
  • f the rock is a limestone rock, you will see bubbles where you applied the vinegar and hear popping sounds. .
  • You will realize that such a reaction takes place only with limestone rocks.

This happens because rock that contain calcium carbonate is made to release its carbon in the form of carbon dioxide on reaction with vinegar or any acid and a few drops of vinegar on the surface of the rock will 'fizz' due to CO2 gas bubbles allowing limestone identification (non carboniferous rocks such as granite will not give any reaction).

A vinegar test can be used to identify limestone. To do the test, set a piece of limestone in a dish and put two other rocks which are not limestone in two other dishes.
Pour some vinegar on each. You will see bubbles and hear a fizzing sound in the limestone dish.
