how do lysosomes perform the function of defence, digestion and cleansing in the cell?
 

Lysosomes are a type of waste disposal system of the cell. They keep the cell clean by digesting any foreign material as well as worn out cell organelles. They do so by breaking them down into simpler particles. It is possible because they contain powerful digestive enzymes capable of breaking down all organelle material. Hence they cleanse the cell.
Also , if there is a disturbance in cell metabolism , for eg: when the cell gets damaged , Lysosomes burst and their enzymes digest the whole cell , thus , they are called suicidal bags of the cell .
