oxidize it to carboxyic acid and the decarboxyalte .now we have benze .now convert it to chlorine using fecl3/dark and then use dows process(naoh at high temp and pressure)

The oxidation of toluene will give us Benzyl alcohol
C6H5CH3~~~~~(oxidation in the presence of Cr2O3 or KMnO4 etc.)~~~~~~~C6H5CH2OH

toluene on treatement with Cl2,hv----CH2Cl-(benzene ring) i.e.benzyl chloride , then treate it with aq.KOH -----benzyl alcohol
its most easy way to do it ...........hope u like it..........:)
